"Incantesimi"
(Charms)

Editalia published a volume under the title “Incantesimi” (Charms). It includes 49 works on paper, created together with Paolo Sabbatini Rancidoro, on the charms of the ancient world.
Here the charm “to disappear” is reproduced.

This is a charm considered in Antiquity indispensable to become invisible, even in the metaphysical sense.

It is part of the corpus “Papyri Graecae magicae” (II century) published by Prof. Preisendanz (Stuttgart 1973-74).

The invoked Greek god is Helios, the young god of the sun, venerated in all Hellas, most of all in Rhodes, where in year 280 the giant statue of Helios, the sixth of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was built.

The bond between the god and the invisibility is the result of the – temporary - dazzle caused by the sun rays.

The yellow paint refers to the sun according to the color table of Giulio Camillo Delminio (XVI century)

The pentacle is taken from (“De umbris idearum” by Giordano Bruno (1582) in which the philosopher argues that the things of this world are nothing else but shadows of divine ideas.
